ELEVATION CERTIFICATE FAQ

Why should you get an elevation certificate?

An elevation certificate ensures your flood insurance rate is tailored to your actual risk. FEMA took a financial hit due to superstorm Sandy. Flood insurance premiums had to raise yearly to try and make up for the losses. One way to make sure the huge financial crisis never occurred again was to lump everyone needing flood insurance into the highest risk. This means you pay the highest premium possible until you get an elevation certificate to lower the premium to what it actually should be. Getting an elevation certificate does just that.

Can you get me out of needing flood insurance?

Possibly, yes. FEMA basis their flood rate maps based on multiple sources of data including aerial imagery. These studies are done over the entire country and since they are done on such a large scale, some error undoubtedly exists. If the results of an elevation certificate determines that you should not be included in the flood hazard area then your house would qualify for a LOMA, or Letter of Map Amendment. A LOMA removes your house from the flood zone entirely.

How long does it take to get an Elevation Certificate?

To perform an elevation certificate, our Elevation Certificate Specialists do need to get inside your house. Because of this, we do need to make an appointment with you to make sure we have access. We schedule elevation certificates as soon as you are able to! Once we come to your house and do the measurements and calculations necessary, your elevation certificate is typically ready the following day. So it doesnt take long at all!
